The sound of the storm outside, one she hadn’t expected, was loud.
So loud.
It’s overwhelming.
She pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders, curling into herself more than she thought possible. The ground was cold, freezing to the touch even through the thick rug. The fire was crackling near her, loud enough to be heard over the storm. It’s flames being the only thing keeping her from shaking. It’s warmth pulling her in, the dancing flames mesmerizing.
A little closer and she wouldn’t be cold at all.
She would never be cold again.
“Don’t get too close, my dear,” the quiet words made her jump, turning towards the door to the old lady of the house. She continued lightly, “You’ll get burned”.
She’s lived in this mansion for years, she knew the walls that kept them safe better than anyone, every nook and cranny. The walls she offered as a sanctuary to the young girl before her.
“Don’t be like the others, child. You get too close they’ll swallow you whole”.
The old lady turned and glided out of the room, footsteps so light you couldn’t hear them.
But she was cold, and the blanket wasn’t very helpful.
Just a little closer.
It’ll be fine.
The old lady sighed.
